Jacqueline Homel

Jacqueline Homel is currently working on her PhD thesis which examines continuity and change in peoples' experiences of victimisation from middle childhood to young adulthood. The project involves collection of data from a group of young adults and their parents who were involved in the `Life at School' study, a longitudinal project examining bullying in ACT schools. The first wave of data was collected in 1996, when the children were in mid to late primary school. In 2005, some of these people will be interviewed again regarding their current experiences of victimisation.

Jacqueline graduated from the University of Queensland in 2001 with a BA (Honours) in psychology with a major in music. From 2002-2003 she worked as a research assistant at the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College, London. During this time she was involved in a study of prevalence and reduction of bullying and violence in British young offender institutions.

From a background in developmental psychology, Jacqueline holds the view that an understanding of how people develop and change in the context of changing environments and relationships is of critical importance to the promotion of health and well being for young people. Rigorous programs of social research have the potential to reach across domains of health, education and public policy to develop strategies that ensure all youth have access to the resources necessary to grow healthy lives and lead Australia into the 21st century.

Apart from saving the world, Jacqueline enjoys the study and performance of early vocal music, long distance running, rock climbing and knitting. After completing her PhD Jacqueline plans to travel overseas to climb mountains, listen to as much Renaissance choral music in as many Gothic cathedrals as possible, and make the coffee for her fellow student, Simon, at his restaurant in Provence.

PhD thesis title
