What do you think about your tax system?Over the past few years, we have been asking Australians about their tax system: What should a fair tax system look like? Do we need a tax system? What is wrong with the one we have? What is good about it? And what can we do to make it better? The reason for asking these questions is that tax systems are a central plank of democracies. It is important that they function well and that they are responsive to democratic will. Tax revolts are not good for stable governance. What is more, research has shown that if we want people to be cooperative and to comply with rules, as we do in a self-assessment tax system, it is important that we all understand the purpose of the rules and feel some degree of ownership over them. We want to continue to hear about how Australians think about their tax system. We therefore invite you to tell us what you think. All responses will be anonymous.
